Oral Sedation: What to Know

Dental anxiety is common—and thankfully, modern sedation options make visits much more comfortable for patients. At Pacific Family Dental, we provide oral sedation specifically. While this option aims to relax patients during dental procedures, it differs in delivery, effect, and ideal use when compared to other sedation methods. Here’s a compassionate, professional look at how oral sedation works and who it’s best suited for.

What Is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription medication (such as diazepam or triazolam) by mouth before the appointment. Its effects are more profound than those of nitrous oxide, which can cause drowsiness or even temporary sleep. However, it allows patients to feel extremely calm, with little to no memory of the procedure afterward.

Because the effects can last several hours, patients must arrange transportation and avoid driving for the rest of the day.

Can be ideal for: Those with moderate to severe dental anxiety, a strong gag reflex, or those undergoing longer or more invasive treatments.

Is Oral Sedation Right for You?

Whether oral sedation is the right choice for you depends on your comfort level, treatment type, medical history, and personal preferences. The type of treatment you’re receiving will also factor in. Whether you need a little help relaxing or more comprehensive sedation, both options are designed to make your visit stress-free and successful.

Don’t hesitate to discuss sedation dentistry with our team if you or your child feels nervous about an upcoming dental appointment. A comfortable experience is always within reach.
